It's been awhile since the last update on the Saugus SETI team has been posted here. Saugus area machines have already contributed over 1200 results, utilizing over three and a third years' worth of CPU time that would have otherwise been wasted. New participants are welcome; the project itself in only just starting to enter its second phase so there is still time to make a difference.

No plastic bags or cardboard boxes will be accepted. We were asked to post the following message from Harry Young, the Saugus Canine Officer:

The Saugus Canine Officer and the Board of Health would like to remind dog and cat owners of their legal obligation to have their pets vaccinated against rabies. See the Community Events Calendar for details on the upcoming Rabies Clinic in Saugus.

Rabies is still prevalent in Massachusetts, and Saugus has recently experienced six positive cases. Rabies is spread through a bite or a scratch from an infected animal. Pets are the most likely bridge between wildlife and people. To best protect yourself adhere to several common sense principles: vaccinate cats and dogs and maintain updates; keep pets restrained at all times; and never approach or feed wild or stray animals.

If you have questions regarding rabies or the clinic, please contact the Canine Officer at 231-4176.

The Saugus Inspectional Services Department has asked us to post the following:

Beginning April 1, the Department of Environment Protection (DEP) will prohibit the disposal, or transfer of disposal, of cathode ray tubes (CRTs) at all Massachusetts solid waste facilities. CRTs are the glass picture tubes found in televisions, computer monitors, and video games that protect users against radiation. The average CRT contains about five pounds of lead.

Instead Saugus residents can bring their old TVs and Computers to the Salvation Army drop-off at 209 Broadway. Business and institutions with CRTs to recycle should consult the Recycling Services Directory published by DEP to locate a recycling company. The Recycling Services Directory is available from DEP's website at: www.state.dep.ma.us/recycle/ and the DEP Infoline at 617/338-2255.

The DEP is taking this regulatory action for several reasons:

  • Continued disposal of bulky electronic components in landfills will unnecessarily accelerate the pace at which the few remaining Massachusetts landfills will run out of space.
  • Incineration of these items carries a potential public health risk. Metals from electronics can be emitted in the air or end up concentrated in the incinerator ash.
  • The waste ban will promote the reuse of unwanted computers through charitable orginizations, as well as the recycling of lead and leaded glass contained in the CRT.
  • Each year, the state throws out about 25,000 tons of CRT electronics. Recycling and repairing those items could create up to 1100 new jobs.
  • Electronics recycling reduces the need for mining of copper, gold, silver, and lead.

The CRT waste ban is similar to the ban on other bulky household items such as large appliances and auto batteries. Disposal facility and transfer station operators must continually monitor incoming loads of trash to identify and remove these banned materials.

For more information on CRT recycling, contact the Saugus Board of Health at 781-231-4115.

Please note that this is not related to the Saugus Curbside Recycling Program. CRTs cannot currently be left out in recycling bins.
