While Saugus Iron Works is known as a cradle of early American industry, visitors to the site are often struck by the interesting trees, shrubs, and other plants on the property. Surrounding the restored 17th century Iron Works House, is a garden consisting of plants that would be indispensable to the 17th century gardener, many brought from Europe to add flavor to food, treat illnesses, or keep vermin away from the home. Saugus Iron Works is also home to some spectacular trees and shrubs, such as the large purple-leaved European Beech which was probably planted in the early 20th century before the Iron Works became a national park. This special program, led by award-winning landscape designer and garden writer Laura Eisener, includes a 45 minute slide lecture will be provided in the auditorium on gardens of the Colonial period, from early settlement until the time of the Revolution. Afterward, there will be a 45 minute tour of the plants at the Iron Works, from the herb gardens surrounding the house to the nature trail in the lower part of the site. Enjoy a historic walking tour of Saugus Center! The walking tour is intended to provide a brief description of the historic buildings and places in the immediate vicinity of Saugus Center. Most of these resources have been identified as potential contributing resources to a National Register historic district. Saugus Center is the heart of the Town of Saugus. It contains the seat of the Town’s Government, as well as some of its oldest religious and commercial buildings, its oldest cemetery, and monuments to its veterans of many wars.

Join a ranger in a short walk down a nature trail, as we discuss different plant and animal adaptations for living in a tidal riparian zone. Learn about some of the different plant and animal species that call the Saugus River home, and come see why it makes a great habitat for a diverse array of species. Join Park Rangers as we compare and contrast the differences of two water sources within the park, the Saugus River and the estuary. Take part in hands on water testing of two bodies of water less than 200 yards apart. Explore the "checkup" of the water by participating in a few simple tests to determine just how healthy the waters are. Find Your Park and celebrate the National Park Service Centennial!
