Sherlock Plug-In

How to download and use the Saugus.net Sherlock plug-in

The Sherlock Internet search feature built into Mac OS 8.5 (and above) was an instant hit with users. In addition to being factory equipped to utilize search engines like AltaVista, DMOZ, Excite, Google, Infoseek, and Lycos, it can be readily expanded to include others like NorthernLight and Yahoo. It can also be used to search Saugus.net.

The free Hemlock package allows one the same functionality on a hand-held Newton MessagePad.

The free Glooton application is similar to Hemlock only for MS-Windows.

Installation: Mac OS 8.5 - 9.2.2

By simply downloading this Sherlock plug-in (also available via FTP) and placing the resulting file (called "Saugus.src") in your "System Folder" you will obtain a Saugus.net option that can be checked on or off the next time Sherlock is run.

Jaguar and Panther have a version of Sherlock (3.0 and above) that's quite different from all earlier versions. In lieu of plug-ins, it uses what it calls "channels". We have an equivalent channel available from here.

Installation: Newton MessagePad with Hemlock

Detailed instructions are available from the Hemlock site. Basically one has to click the "New" button, enter:
https://zope.saugus.net/VirtualHosts/www.saugus.net/Local/Search/Sherlock/Saugus.src.hqx

Obviously, Hemlock must first be installed for this to work.
